BOKEI KHAN BARAK ULY

Kazakh khan Bokei Barak uly was born approximately in 1737. Son of Barak khan, grandson of Tursyn khan. He was the fourth ancestor of one of Kazakh Kazakh intellectuals, Alikhan Bukeikhanov of the beginning of ХХ century. In 1749, as per father’s order, Bokei and his tolengits migrated from Turkestan region to the North-East Kazakhstan. He was elected to be sultan of qarakesek race through bigeldy (Ismurzin, 2006: 42). In early 50s of XVIII century, Bokei settled in Koryakov fortress (currently Pavlodar) and took part in a battle of Middle zhuz against Dzungarian invaders. In 80–90 of XVIII century, Bokei facilitated trade caravans migrate via Kazakh steppe from Russian to Middle Asia and changing of trade network direction from Petropavlovsk to Yamyshevskiy fortress. For that purpose, in 1785, Bokei actively supported the foundation of first Kyrgyz embassy in Russia. The ambassy was headed by famous bey Sarybagash Atake batyr. From the period from August 2, 1786 to January 1787, Bokey ordered to organize Kazakh embassy, consisted of his son Batyr sultan, two elders and two tolengits. In early 90s of XVIII century, having close cooperation with Djunuskhoja, Tashkent ruler, in 1740–1750, such Kazakh embassy returned Ikan pasture, belonging to his father Barak khan. After that, until occupation of Bukhara khanate, Turkestan region became Bokei’s winter headquarters. In 1816, Bokei with Uali khan ruled races of Middle zhuz as qarakesek, tortayl. Bokei was declared to be khan in June of 1817 around Zhayilma river in 180 km from Koryakov fortress (Erofeeva, 1997: 133). He ruled khanate before 1819 and was buried in Turkestan (Kazakh Khans 2015:176).
