THE BARRACKS

It is located on the territory of the old settlement of Turkestan. A monument of local importance. In 1994, it was included in the collection «Collection of historical and Cultural monuments of Kazakhstan» in the South Kazakhstan region under the number No. 594.2 and taken under state protection. This building was built as a barracks for junior officers of the 1st company of the Turkestan Infantry Battalion.

It is a one-story brick building with a rectangular iron roof. The building is 70 m long and 15 m wide. The facades are symmetrical, the central and side parts are decorated with weak risalites and decorated with frames. The width of the wall is divided by a narrow window slit and pilasters. The structure of the interior design is symmetrical: the large hall consists of three parts separated by two rows of columns.

In the 1990s, the idea arose to turn the building into a museum of the history of the city of Turkestan. In 1995, the Aziret Sultan Museum-Reserve, together with the A.Margulan Institute of Archaeology, founded the Turkestan Archaeological Expedition in order to collect materials for the future museum «History of Turkestan» on the study of medieval mounds and burial grounds located in the Turkestan region.

The building of the historical monument was chosen as the address for the museum, and an 8-part museum exhibit was created, which opened as a museum on the eve of the 1500th anniversary of the city of Turkestan.

In 2014-2015, restoration work was carried out, and in 2016, work on the re-exhibition, modernization, replenishment, and reconstruction of old exhibits in a new format.
