SAMEKE KHAN TAUKE ULY

Sameke khan (year of birth unknown, year of death is 1738) was one of khans of Middle zhuz. He was son of Tauke khan, grandson of Salkam Jangir khan. Sameke khan exercised his authority in following years after “Aktaban shubyryndy”. His headquarter located in Turkestan. In Russian sources his name is Shahmuhamad, Shamaka, Shemahi, Shemyaka, Shahmahmet (Erofeeva, 1997: 77). Sameke khan ruled some naiman and qypchak tribes and part of argyn race. Domestically, he made efforts to unite Middle zhuz. In foreign-policy he was famous with his opposition to Dzungarian and Central Asia khanates agression. In 1723 and 1726, Sameke khan united with Abulhair khan to release Kazakh land from Kalmyk khanates and twice did he head to military campaign against Lesser Kalmyk Horde located on Volga river. In the fights against external and internal enemies, he tried to rely on his stronger Russian neighbor. On December 15, 1731 together with A. Tevkeleev he had negotiations with Russia concerning cooperation. In Abulhair khan’s letter to Ufa dated 1730, he noted that Sameke possessed Turkestan city (History of Kazakhstan in Russian sources, 2005: 369). Sameke khan, who awakened the spirit of Kazakh people against Dzungarian invasion, inspired people’s confidence, became finest warrior in future and made himself memorable. In the manuscript of Abd Rahim Uzkandi named “Risolya (Charter) of Genghis khan” said that in 1228 A. H., which is 1813 as per our calendar: “Jahangir khan, Tauakkal Mohamad Bahadur khan, Shah Mohamad Bahadur khan Turkestanda iatqan”, which means, “Jangir khan, Taukkel Mohamat bahadur khan, Shah Mohamat (Sameke) Bahadur khan buried in Turkestan”. This record evidences that Sameke khan was actually buried in Turkestan (Kazakh khans 2015: 176).
