The burial place of the Kazakh Khan Yesim is located in the city of Turkestan. It is historically reliable that during his reign the city of Yasy was renamed Turkestan — «the land of the Turks» — and became the capital of the Kazakh Khanate. By order of Yesim Khan, Turkestan was proclaimed the political and spiritual center of the Kazakh people. For several centuries, this city served as the residence of twenty-one Kazakh khans.
Yesim Khan was a representative of the Genghis Khan dynasty and ruled the Kazakh Khanate from 1598 to 1628. He was the son of Shygai Khan. It is known that he spent his entire life in battles, demonstrating courage and heroism, thanks to which he earned the respect of the people and went down in history as a valiant ruler.
In Kazakh history, Yesim Khan received the nickname “Ensegey Boili Er Yesim” — “tall and fearless Yesim”. This name was given to him in 1598 during a military expedition to Maverannahr together with his brother Tauekel Khan. After the death of his brother and accession to the throne, the first thing Yesim Khan did was establish order in Maverannahr. As historian Iskander Munshi notes: “After some time, with the mediation of the sheikhs of the Naqshbandi tariqa, peace was established between the Kazakh ruler in Tashkent and the Central Asian emirates. An agreement was concluded that the Samarkand army would not take any action against Tashkent.” This means legal recognition of the annexation of Turkestan and Tashkent to the territory of the Kazakh Khanate. The fact that Turkestan became the capital of the Kazakh Khanate under Yesim Khan is also reflected in oral folklore. The epic «Isatay-Makhambet» says:
The throne of Genghis was restored once again,
And the flag was raised in Turkestan.
The place where our ancestors lived,
Where the khans lived.
Thus, the reign of Yesim Khan became an important stage in the history of the Kazakh Khanate, strengthening the statehood, territorial integrity and spiritual foundation of the Kazakh people.
