TOBYKTY ZHANDOS BATYR OLZHAYULY (1715-1752)

When the fate of our people was in danger and war was approaching, the leaders of the country, biys, sages of that time directly contributed to the adoption of the main state law «Zhety Zhargy». With the wisdom of Anet baba, Tole bi, Kaz-dausty Kazybek bi and Aiteke bi, Az Tauke Khan created the Khan’s Council to resolve «State issues». Sultans, biys and military leaders were summoned to the council.

One of the difficult periods, when the people were suppressed by enemies, the Kazakhs lost their unity, and even almost disappeared as a nation, this time was called «Aktaban shubyryndy — Alkaköl sulama».

«A man is known in difficulties», defending his country and land, expressing courage, and standing boldly before the enemy, whose courage the people remember, who were the defenders of their country, and whose names became the motto for the country, these are Bogembay batyr, Shakshak Zhanibek, Kokenay batyr, Boribay batyr, Koylybay batyr, Zhaugash batyr, etc. We can mention the heroes who defended their country and their land, who became the symbol of the nation. Today’s topic will be about the brave, strong and courageous Zhandos batyr Olzhayuly. According to the available information about Zhandos batyr, he was born in 1715 and died in 1752. Zhandos — in his youth he underwent combat training with Mamai batyr and from the age of thirteen, the “younger son” of Olzhai, Zhandos was a servant, student and younger friend of Mamai batyr.

Once, at the age of 9, Zhandos went to the Kalmyk and Kazakh front lines from the Terisakkan River in Torgai, where he patiently, persistently and diligently nursed his two younger brothers — Bokenshi and Borsakty, who were nursed by a camel and safely brought them home. From such historical data, one can understand that Zhandos batyr’s fighting qualities, patience and persistence were already present in childhood. According to the genealogy, Zhandos batyr’s origins come from the Middle Zhuz, including Argyn-Tobykty, more precisely Ryspetek-Musabay-Suyirbas-Sary-Umbetay-Kishik-Aitek-Olzhai-Zhigitek (Shakarim Kudaiberdiuly, Shezhire, A., 1990. pp. 78-81)

One day, Zhandos batyr fell into the hands of Kalmyk spies. Although he said: «I’m going to look for a lost camel,» the Kalmyks caught the armed Zhandos batyr, wrapped him in felt, lit a fire under him and mocked him, wondering how he would die. At that moment a dark cloud appeared in the sky, thunder and lightning struck, and the Kalmyk scouts, frightened and confused, mounted their horses and fled. The felt burned, but the holy spirit of Zhandos batyr saved him. This spirit was passed on to his eldest son Kengirbai Bi and his grandson, Saint Yeral.

Brothers Mamai Batyr and Zhandos Batyr thought, if we die and become martyrs, where will future generations look for us? They swore that they would take the body of the previously deceased to the mausoleum of the Sultan of Saints Khoja Ahmed Yasaui and bury it.

According to the oath, Mamai Batyr with a large army took the body of his younger brother Zhandos Batyr to Turkestan, installed his spear and white flag on his grave, and thus buried him.

Zhandos Batyr Olzhaiuly, who worked tirelessly for his country and land on the path to independence of the Kazakh people, was buried in the sacred mausoleum of Turkestan Kul Khoja Ahmed Yasaui together with khans, batyrs and other noble people of the Kazakh people.
