MOSQUE – SHAMET ISHAN MADRASSAH

Complex architectural monument located in the center of the village Karnak in Kentau. The building was laid at the end of the XVIII century, in 1789 for the purpose of teaching literacy to the population. Shamet-Ishan received and perfected his religious knowledge from his father. He was a very far-sighted, intelligent man. Therefore, with the help of local carpenters, he began the construction of a mosque-madrasah. The construction of the building consisted of several stages. It was first established as a tomb, a mosque, and then as a madrassah. In 1789 the Small Shed would be built, in 1876 the large Aksaray. Inside the Small Shed is the room of Gara. Allah was worshipped in that very place.

Architectural design of the complex, plastering the interior and Arabic inscriptions of the mausoleum of Khoja Akhmed Yassawi were the basis for construction. In the 1890s, construction began on the aivan and additional rooms for learning. In 1896 the building would be fully completed. Teaching in the madrasah continued until 1917. In the same year, the building was transferred to an orphanage. And in 1982 the building was abandoned. After the museum was opened in 2005, in 2009, in accordance with a government decree, major repairs were carried out under the program “Cultural Heritage”. Most of the treasures that have survived to this day reflect the history of the Middle Ages and the new period.
