The monument is located 50 kilometers northwest of the Turkistan city, within the territory of the Zhibek Zholy rural district, east of the ruins of the medieval city of Sauran. Coordinates: 43˚31.021΄, 067˚46.548΄. The above-ground part of the mausoleum is destroyed and turned into ruins. there is believed to be an underground room — sagana — under the burial.
According to popular legend, Saray Ata was an outstanding religious figure who possessed a special gift, poetic talent and the ability to inspire people with his preaching. He continued the spiritual teachings of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, followed the Sufi path, and was a practitioner of dhikr and a pious man.
The Turkistan region is known for many revered religious figures like Saray Ata, yet each of them is venerated for their special qualities and spiritual deeds. Saray Ata is regarded as one of the nine revered saints (babs) of Sauran, a group of saints highly honored in the local religious tradition.
