ARGYN BERTIS BI (BERDIBEK) SHANSHARULY (1633–1707)

Bertis bi belongs to the Karakesek (Bolatkozha) clan of the Argyn tribe of the Middle Zhuz. His father, Shanshar Bulbululy, sided with Yesim Khan during the conflict between Yesim Khan and Tursun Khan and distinguished himself with his eloquence and leadership qualities. In the 17th century, Bertis Shansharuly fought heroically in the Kazakh-Dzungar War, leading the army and demonstrating resourcefulness and ingenuity during difficult times. He took a direct part in the battle for the liberation of Tashkent, Balkhash, and Karkaraly from the Dzungar conquerors. He was an advisor to Tauke Khan. According to ancient legends, Bertis Shansharuly was enthroned in place of the deposed khan and led the Tashkent region. Bertis Shansharuly was a versatile man, an outstanding orator, a talented poet, and a renowned kuyshi. He is the great-grandfather of the biys and orators Ospenbet, Bektemir, Mosheke, Kazangap, Kantai, Tontai, the famous kuyshi Tattimbet, and Ulzhan, Abai’s mother. A bay of Lake Balkhash and a spring on the northern coast are named after Bertis bi. His descendant Tattimbet is the author of the kuy «Bertis.» According to Bertis biy’s will, he was buried in the Khoja Akhmad Yasawi mausoleum in the city of Turkestan.
