Shaharstan Fortress and towers surround the ancient city of Turkestan. It was built in the first half of the nineteenth century. According to historical data the ancient city consisted of three parts: Citadel, Shaharstan and Rabad. These data proved the results of archaeological excavations. In order not to block the panoramic view of the mausoleum of Khoja Akhmed Yassawi and the adjacent historical and cultural monuments, only the foundation of the castle was restored. The foundation of the Shaharstan Castle was the border between the modern city and medieval Turkestan.
